White-tailed Jackrabbit Fun Facts

White-tailed jackrabbits are actually a species of hare, as are all jackrabbits. Their young are born in litters with 3-6 babies, all of which are able to run immediately after birth. They are born with fur and hidden while their mother nurses them until they are about five weeks old.

White-tailed Jackrabbits are mostly nocturnal and spend their days in tall grasses or shrubs and are rarely seen. These hares can jump seventeen feet in one leap and have been known to run as fast as forty miles an hour and leap about five meters into the air. They rely on their high speed to escape predators. One less known fact is that jackrabbits can swim extremely well.

White-tailed Jackrabbits' diets consist of clover, alfalfa, dried grasses, tree bark, and roots. In the summer, they eat mostly green vegetation, and in the winter they eat dried vegetation.

The jackrabbits will let out a sharp, high, piercing scream if they are caught in a trap or by a predator. To avoid being caught, they lie quiet and still in grasses and point their ears to listen for danger.
